Department of extreme states of materials and stuctures
Head of the department - corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Ph.D., Dr.Sc., Yuri Petrov
The department is established on the basis of joint educational-scientific center of St.-Petersburg State University and the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Scientific research of the department is basically focused on:
- Mathematical simulation of dynamics of limiting states of engineering structures and natural objects undergoing extremely intensive thermomechanical and physical loads;
- Analysis and prediction of constructions with defects (formation of micro- and macro- rupture, propagation of cracks, catastrophic fracture, etc.), development of state-of-the-art criteria for prediction of load capacity of materials and structure components in extreme states;
- Investigation of multiscale nature of dynamic deformation and fracture of natural and engineering objects under extreme loads.
Some of the department units are affiliated with Research Center of Dynamics, created on the basis of collaboration between St.-Petersburg State University and Institute of problems in Mechanical Engineering of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
